The HX50 Main Rotor Gearbox uses a planetary gear system with 3 planet gears. The main gearbox must withstand the torque, power, and temperature requirements of the helicopter. The life of the Gearbox is 5000 hours. The gears are masked with copper plating. Then the teeth are machined out and the entire gear is heat treated. It is then quenched in oil and the copper mask is removed. Only the areas of the gear teeth that contact each other should be heat treated as it increases the brittleness.
