Damping Curve Charts

Damping curve charts show the response of a system for different damping ratios. These can then be used ,via inspection of the measured transfer function, to estimate the damping ratio of your system. These curves can be either for an impulse input or a step input. Damping removes energy from a system to allow it to settle. The damping curves can either be a time response or a frequency response. An overdamped system has a damping ratio of at least 1.

The period of oscillation is defined as
$$\tau=\frac{2\pi}{\omega_n}$$
