Cell balancing is a core function of a BMS system. Because the cells charge and discharge at different rates, the BMS must balance the load between the cells to try to maintain the same Voltage and State of charge. If cell balancing is not done, then the cells will degrade at different rates, which will have the effect of reducing the capacity of the battery pack.
