The moment of inertia is the rotational form of what mass would be for linear motion. It represents how difficult it is to change the angular velocity of an object. The basic equation is
$$I=\int_v\rho(r)r^2dv$$
Where \(r^2\) is the dot product of \(r\) with itself. \(\rho\) is the density function of the object and \(r\) is the position vector relative to the center of mass? An aircraft with planar symmetry would have an inertial matrix that looks like this
